Chilean celebrities with a hair transplant: footballers and TV personalities who confirmed it

Después trasplante capilar

More and more Chilean public figures are speaking openly about their hair transplant. Footballers, TV hosts, and television personalities have shared that they had a hair graft, and that has helped break down a taboo: restoring your hair is no longer a secret, it is a medical decision like any other.

In this article we review the Chilean celebrities with a hair transplant who have confirmed it themselves, and most importantly: what that means for you if you are thinking about getting one.

Why are more and more public figures talking about it?

A few years ago, getting a hair graft was something almost no one admitted. Today the opposite is true: many public figures prefer to share it before others comment on it. And it makes sense. A person who appears on screen, on a football pitch, or on social media lives under the gaze of thousands of people, and any change in their image is noticed immediately.

When someone well known talks naturally about their transplant, it takes the weight off the subject and sends an important message: hair loss is a common medical condition, not a defect or something to be ashamed of. For many patients who come to the clinic, seeing that an athlete or a TV host went through the same thing was the push they needed to ask for an evaluation.

That said, it is worth looking at these cases with some distance. What we see on television or Instagram is only part of the story: we don’t know each person’s diagnosis, how many grafts they needed, what medical treatment they use, or how much time passed between the surgery and the photo. That is why, rather than copying a result, what is useful is understanding what lies behind it.

Gary Medel: the “Pitbull” also had a hair implant

Former Chile national team player Gary Medel said in 2024, in an interview with the Brazilian press, that he had had a hair implant in Spain during his last months in Europe, before arriving in Brazil. The reason was simple: “My hairline had receded a lot.” And according to what he himself said, the result worked very well.

His case is a good example of what men ask about most: a pronounced receding hairline at the front, the typical pattern of androgenetic alopecia. It is precisely the type of hair loss in which FUE transplant gives the best results.

José Miguel Viñuela: a pioneer in talking about it

TV host José Miguel Viñuela is one of the first personalities to speak openly about the subject on Chilean television. He said he had his hair graft in 2006. Almost 20 years later he is still a reference when people talk about hair transplants, which shows something key: transplanted hair is permanent, because it comes from the donor area, which is resistant to hair loss.

José Antonio Neme: he told it first-hand

Journalist and TV host José Antonio Neme also said on television, in 2025, that he had had a hair graft a few weeks earlier. Talking about the process naturally helps more people lose their fear of seeking a consultation.

Daniel Fuenzalida: patience is also part of the result

In 2026, TV host Daniel Fuenzalida showed his new look on social media after undergoing a hair graft. Weeks later, some people questioned how his hair looked. He replied that he had talked with his doctor and that everything was going as expected, including the shedding of part of the grafted hair.

This is completely normal and has a name: shock loss, or shedding of the transplanted hair. Between the second and sixth week, the shaft of the grafted hair falls out, but the follicle stays alive under the skin and starts growing again from the third or fourth month. The final result can be seen between 12 and 18 months. We explain it in detail in After a hair transplant: what to expect from day 1 to month 12.

Other footballers who talked about their alopecia

Full-back Gabriel Suazo spoke publicly about his alopecia and said that “fortunately, grafts exist.” Outside Chile, Mexican striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernández has also joked about his hair graft. In football, where image is always in front of the cameras, more and more players accept it without hang-ups.

What an FUE hair transplant really involves

Behind every change of look there is a medical procedure worth knowing about. In the FUE technique (follicular unit extraction), small groups of follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area, which is usually the back and sides of the head, and implanted in areas with less density, such as the temples or the crown.

  • Before: a medical evaluation, ideally with trichoscopy, to confirm the diagnosis, measure the donor area, and design the frontal hairline. At Clínica Lumos we use trichoscopy with artificial intelligence, and pre-operative tests can be taken at the clinic itself.
  • On the day of the procedure: it is performed under local anesthesia and usually takes several hours. You can learn about each stage in hair transplant day, step by step.
  • After: in the first few days small scabs and some redness appear, which gradually disappear. Then comes the temporary shedding of the grafted hair and, from there, progressive growth.

In other words, the result a public figure shows in a photo months later is the end of a process that requires time, care, and medical follow-up. No one leaves the operating room with the hair they will have a year later.

Why results vary from one person to another

Two people can have the same procedure and end up with different results. It is not a coincidence or necessarily a mistake: there are factors specific to each patient that have a big influence.

  • The type and stage of alopecia. Having a slightly receding hairline is not the same as having a very thin crown. If you want to understand your pattern, see alopecia patterns: where you lose hair.
  • The donor area. It is a limited resource. Its density and quality determine how much can be covered.
  • Hair characteristics. Thickness, color, whether it is straight or curly, and the contrast with the skin change the perception of density.
  • The underlying medical treatment. A transplant does not stop the loss of hair that was not transplanted. Without treatment, alopecia can keep progressing around the grafts.
  • Aftercare. Following the post-operative instructions helps protect the grafts during the first few weeks.

Myths that come up whenever a celebrity gets a graft

Every time a well-known face talks about their transplant, comments appear on social media that are worth clearing up:

If you want to look at more common beliefs, we have an article dedicated to FUE hair transplant myths.

Can you look like them?

Yes, and you don’t need to be famous or travel abroad. What these cases have in common is not fame, but three things any patient can have:

  • A correct diagnosis. Not all hair loss is treated with a transplant. First you need to know what type of alopecia you have (see types of alopecia).
  • A good donor area. The density at the back of the head determines how many grafts can be extracted. It is measured during the trichological evaluation.
  • A specialist physician and realistic expectations. The design of the frontal hairline must look natural for your age and your face.

At Clínica Lumos, Dr. Evelyn Alfonso performs FUE hair implants in Viña del Mar, with patients from all over Chile, as well as the hair transplant without shaving technique for those who don’t want the procedure to be noticeable.

How to have realistic expectations

Being inspired by a public figure is fine, but the goal should be the best possible result for you, not a copy of someone else’s hair. Some ideas that can help you before the consultation:

  • Bring photos of yourself from previous years. They help to discuss what your frontal hairline was like and what design would look natural today.
  • Think long term. A very low frontal hairline may look good at 25, but not necessarily at 50. A good design considers how your face will age.
  • Ask what can be achieved with your donor area. Sometimes it is best to prioritize the front, which is what most defines the face.
  • Consider medical treatment. In many cases the best result combines surgery and treatment. Learn about the Hair Protocol and the alternatives to improve density without a transplant.
  • Be patient. The result is built month by month. Week-by-week comparisons tend to cause unnecessary anxiety.

How to choose where to have your transplant

Public figures usually have access to a lot of information before deciding. You can ask the right questions too:

  • Who evaluates me and who performs the procedure? At Clínica Lumos, Dr. Evelyn Alfonso personally evaluates each patient and leads every procedure. She trained in the FUE technique in Turkey, Italy, and Barcelona.
  • Is the operating room authorized? Our operating room is authorized by the SEREMI de Salud (regional health authority). You can see more in safe clinic.
  • What will the follow-up be like? During treatment you have contact with the team via WhatsApp to answer questions.
  • What if I already had surgery somewhere else and I am not satisfied? There are options; we explain them in correction of a hair transplant done at another clinic.

When to seek a consultation?

You don’t need to wait until you have advanced baldness. It is a good idea to ask for an evaluation if you notice your hairline receding, if you see your crown looking thinner in photos, if you find more hair than usual on your pillow or in the shower, or if you have a family history of baldness and want to know what stage you are at. The sooner the diagnosis is known, the more options there are to take care of the hair you still have.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hair transplant noticeable?

When the design is natural and the technique is careful, the final result should not look artificial. During the first few weeks it may be noticeable, because of the scabs and the short hair. If discretion is a concern, there is the option of a hair transplant without shaving.

How long does it take to see the final result?

Hair starts to grow from the third or fourth month, and the final result can be seen between 12 and 18 months.

Can I end up looking just like a celebrity?

Every case is different. The result depends on your diagnosis, your donor area, and the type of hair you have. What matters is that the result looks natural on you.

Does a transplant work for women?

Yes, in some cases. Female alopecia is usually more diffuse and requires a careful diagnosis. Read more about alopecia in women.

Do I have to travel from Santiago?

Clínica Lumos is in Viña del Mar, about an hour and a half from Santiago, and we see patients from all over Chile.

In summary

Chilean public figures talking about their hair transplant has helped normalize something that happens to many people. But behind every case there is a diagnosis, a donor area, a design, and months of patience. If you are thinking about getting one, the most important thing is not to look like a celebrity, but to get an honest evaluation that tells you what is possible in your case.

Book your evaluation

If you identify with Medel’s receding hairline or with a thinning crown, the first step is an evaluation with trichoscopy to find out whether you are a candidate. Also see am I a candidate for a hair transplant?
