LipoVaser vs. Traditional Liposuction: Differences, Recovery and Ideal Candidates
October 16, 2026 · By Dr. Evelyn Alfonso
If you are considering liposculpture, you have probably come across two terms: traditional liposuction and LipoVaser. Although the end goal—reshaping the body contour—is the same, the technology and the patient experience are quite different. At Clínica Lumos, in Viña del Mar, we work with state-of-the-art LipoVaser/LipoLaser technology, and in this article we explain how they differ so you can discuss it knowledgeably at your evaluation.

What is traditional liposuction?
Traditional liposuction is a technique that has been used in cosmetic surgery for decades. It involves inserting a cannula, a thin tube, through small incisions and removing the fat through back-and-forth movements and suction. In other words, the fat is separated from the tissues and suctioned out in a mainly mechanical way.
It is a well-known and valid technique that has produced good results for many years. Its main challenge is that, because it works mechanically, the cannula also impacts the tissues surrounding the fat: small blood vessels, fibers and connective tissue. This is related to post-operative bleeding, swelling and bruising.
What is LipoVaser?
LipoVaser (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) uses ultrasound energy to selectively emulsify fat before removing it. Unlike conventional liposuction, which removes fatty tissue mechanically, ultrasound liquefies the fat without damaging the surrounding blood vessels, nerves or connective tissue.

How it works, step by step
- Preparing the area: as with other liposuction techniques, a solution is generally infiltrated into the area to be treated to prepare the tissue.
- Emulsification: next, a probe that emits ultrasound energy is inserted. This energy acts selectively on the fat cells and “loosens” them from their surroundings, turning them into an emulsion.
- Suction: the emulsified fat is suctioned out with fine cannulas, using less mechanical force than in the traditional technique.
- Final shaping: the smoothness of the contour is checked and the area is given its finishing touches.
At Clínica Lumos, LipoVaser can be combined with LipoLaser, which also aims to promote skin retraction. If you want to understand how these technologies complement each other, see LipoVaser, LipoLaser and microaspiration.
Main differences
- Precision: by preserving the structures surrounding the fat, LipoVaser allows more selective work, useful for areas where definition is sought (abdomen, flanks).
- Bleeding and tissue trauma: because it is more selective, bleeding and swelling tend to be less than with traditional liposuction.
- Recovery: many patients resume light activities within 1-2 days, although the exact time depends on the extent of the procedure and on each person’s body.
- Skin firmness: ultrasonic energy can promote some skin retraction, a relevant point in patients with good skin elasticity.
The comparison in simple terms
To sum it up: in traditional liposuction the cannula does almost all the work, separating and suctioning the fat at the same time. With LipoVaser, the ultrasound first does the work of separating the fat, and the cannula is mainly responsible for suctioning it. That division of labor is what aims for gentler treatment of the tissues and a finer finish.
This is especially useful in fibrous areas, such as the back or the male chest, where fat is more firmly attached, and in areas that require detail, such as the arms or double chin. You can read more about this in body areas that can be treated with LipoVaser.
What does not change between the two techniques
Some things are the same regardless of the technology, and it is important to be clear about them:
- Both are surgeries. They require a medical evaluation, pre-operative tests, anesthesia and a suitable operating room.
- Neither is a weight-loss method. They are designed for localized fat. If you have questions about this, read myths about liposuction and weight loss.
- Both involve a post-operative period. There will be swelling, tenderness and use of a compression garment as instructed.
- The result depends on each person’s body, the quality of their skin, the experience of the surgeon and the aftercare.
- No technique can guarantee a result. What can be done is to plan carefully and work safely.
Who is a candidate?
In general, we look for patients with a stable weight, localized fat deposits (not as a weight-loss method), good general health and realistic expectations. The evaluation with Dr. Evelyn Alfonso is the essential step: every body responds differently and the plan is designed according to your anatomy and goals.
At that evaluation, the doctor examines you personally, reviews your fat distribution and skin quality, discusses your health history with you and explains which technique and which areas make sense in your case. If after the evaluation you decide to go ahead, we recommend reading how to prepare for liposuction.
When it may not be the best option
- If your main goal is to lose a significant amount of weight.
- If your main concern is loose or very saggy skin, rather than fat.
- If you have an uncontrolled health condition that increases the risk of surgery.
- If you smoke and cannot stop for the indicated period. More information in smoking before surgery.
What recovery with LipoVaser is like
Recovery is one of the points people comparing techniques ask about most. As we mentioned, many people resume light activities within a few days, but that does not mean the process ends there. During the first few weeks it is normal to have swelling, tenderness, bruising and some stiffness in the treated areas. The compression garment, hydration, gentle walking and following the team’s instructions help make the process easier.
The result is revealed as the swelling goes down, which happens gradually. We recommend reading recovery after LipoVaser week by week, compression garment and lymphatic drainage and when results become visible.
Warning signs after any liposuction
Regardless of the technique, contact the team immediately if you have a fever, severe pain that does not improve with the prescribed treatment, shortness of breath, pain or swelling in a calf, or redness, warmth or discharge from an incision. At Clínica Lumos you have direct contact via WhatsApp throughout your treatment to answer questions and report any symptoms.
Common myths when comparing techniques
“With technology, there is no recovery”
Technology aims to make recovery easier, but it does not eliminate it. It is still surgery, with swelling, care and check-ups. Planning a few days of relative rest and following instructions is part of the result.
“LipoVaser is a non-invasive treatment”
No. It requires small incisions, anesthesia and an operating room. There are non-invasive body contouring treatments, but they are a different category, with a different scope.
“If it is gentler, I can treat all areas at once”
The number of areas and the amount of fat that can be treated in one surgery have safety limits that do not depend only on the technique. This is defined at the evaluation.
“What matters is the machine”
Technology helps, but the result also depends on the diagnosis, the planning, the surgeon’s experience and your aftercare. That is why the personal evaluation is so important.
What to ask at your evaluation
- Which technique do you recommend and why, in my particular case?
- Which areas make sense to treat and which do not?
- What result is reasonable to expect with my skin type?
- How many days of rest should I plan for, given my job?
- What will follow-up look like after surgery?
Bringing these questions written down helps you leave the consultation with clarity and make an informed decision, without pressure.
A procedure always performed in an authorized operating room
At Clínica Lumos, all LipoVaser procedures are performed in a surgical suite authorized by the SEREMI de Salud (regional health authority), with established safety protocols. You can learn more in safe clinic.
When comparing options, beyond the technology, we suggest always asking who will perform the procedure, where it will be done, whether the operating room has health authorization and what follow-up will look like after surgery. Those answers say a lot about the safety of the process.
Frequently asked questions
Is LipoVaser better than traditional liposuction?
There is no better technique in the abstract. LipoVaser has advantages in precision and in how it treats the tissues, but the indication depends on your case, and that is defined at the evaluation.
Is LipoVaser less painful?
Because it aims for less tissue trauma, many people describe an easier post-op period. Even so, the perception of discomfort is very personal and depends on the extent of the surgery.
Does the ultrasound burn the skin?
The procedure is performed with techniques and precautions designed to protect the skin. As with any surgery, there are risks, which the doctor explains to you at the evaluation.
Is the LipoVaser result permanent?
The fat cells removed do not regenerate, but the remaining ones can grow if you gain weight. Maintaining a stable weight is key.
Does LipoVaser work for sagging skin?
It can promote some skin retraction, especially if the skin has good elasticity, but it does not replace other procedures when sagging is significant.
In summary
There is no better technique in the abstract; there is the right technique for your case. LipoVaser uses ultrasound to emulsify fat before suctioning it, aiming for more precision, less bleeding and swelling, and an easier recovery than the traditional technique. Both are still surgeries that require evaluation, an authorized operating room and responsible aftercare.
If you want to know whether LipoVaser is right for you, book an evaluation with Dr. Alfonso and let us answer your questions based on your anatomy, not a generic answer. Learn about the procedure on LipoVaser and LipoLaser or book your evaluation here.
