LipoVaser: Which Body Areas Can Be Treated
October 22, 2026 · By Dr. Evelyn Alfonso

LipoVaser is an ultrasound-assisted liposuction technique that makes it possible to remove localized fat precisely and with less trauma to the tissues. One of the most frequent questions at the consultation is: which areas can be treated?
The short answer is that many areas of the body where localized fat accumulates can be treated. The full answer is a bit more interesting: each area has its own anatomy, its own type of fat and its own way of responding to surgery. That is why an abdomen is not treated the same way as a double chin or the knees. In this article we explain the most common areas, what is sought in each one and what is worth keeping in mind before deciding.
Most common areas
- Abdomen (upper and lower): the most requested area, for both men and women.
- Flanks or “love handles”: usually treated together with the abdomen to define the waist.
- Back: lower back and bra area.
- Arms: back of the upper arm.
- Thighs: inner and outer thighs (“saddlebags”).
- Double chin or submental area: to define the jawline.
- Knees: the inner side, where fat is very resistant to exercise.
- Male chest: when the increase in volume is due to fat.
Area by area: what is sought and what to consider
Abdomen
This is the area that generates the most inquiries. In the abdomen, fat can be under the skin, which is the fat that can be treated with liposuction, or inside the abdomen, around the organs, which is not treated with this technique. That is why two abdomens that look similar may have different indications. The skin and the abdominal wall are also assessed: if there is a lot of sagging, significant stretch marks or separation of the muscles after pregnancies, liposuction on its own may not be enough. Flanks and waist
The flanks are one of those deposits that are very hard to shift with exercise. Treating them together with the abdomen and, sometimes, the lower back helps to sculpt the waist in 360 degrees, that is, looking at the body from every angle and not just from the front. We have an article dedicated to this area: flank and waist liposuction.
Back
On the back, fat tends to be more fibrous, meaning it is interwoven with firmer tissue. Here ultrasound technology is especially useful, because it helps to work with this type of fat. The bra area and the lower back are the most frequently asked about, especially because of how they look in tight clothing.
Arms
The back of the upper arm accumulates fat easily and is an area that requires a fine finish to achieve a harmonious result. It is important to assess the skin: if the main problem is hanging skin rather than fat, the result of liposuction will be limited.
Thighs
On the outer side, the well-known saddlebags, and on the inner side, where the skin is usually thinner. Each area of the thigh requires a different approach to keep the contour smooth. Cellulite is also discussed here: liposuction is not designed to treat it. If it is something that concerns you, you can read about mesotherapy for cellulite.
Double chin
A small amount of fat under the chin can considerably change the definition of the jaw and the profile. It is a delicate area, where precision matters a great deal. The quality of the neck skin is assessed, as well as whether the double chin is due to fat, sagging or other structures.
Knees
The inner side of the knee is a small area, but very resistant to exercise. It is usually treated together with the thighs to achieve a more harmonious transition along the leg.
Male chest
When the increase in volume is due to fat, liposuction can improve the contour of the chest. If the volume is due to glandular tissue, the approach may be different. This is determined at the evaluation, and in some cases complementary tests may be requested.
Why does technology matter depending on the area?
LipoVaser ultrasound emulsifies fat selectively, which makes it easier to work on fibrous areas—such as the back or the male chest—and to achieve a finer finish in delicate areas such as the arms or double chin. Combined with LipoLaser, it also aims to promote skin retraction. Learn more in LipoVaser vs. traditional liposuction.
Put simply: first the fat is “loosened” with ultrasound energy and then it is suctioned out with fine cannulas. The aim is to reduce trauma to the tissues surrounding the fat. If you want to understand how these technologies complement each other, see LipoVaser, LipoLaser and microaspiration.
Can several areas be treated in the same surgery?
Yes, it is common to combine areas, such as the abdomen with the flanks and back. The limit is set by the medical evaluation: the amount of fat to be removed, your health status and the safety of the procedure.
Combining areas can give a more harmonious result, because the body is seen as a whole. But more areas also means more extensive surgery and, in general, a recovery that requires more care. That is why the decision is made together: which areas contribute most to your goal, which can wait and what is safe to do in a single procedure. If you already have a date, see how to prepare for liposuction.
What LipoVaser does not do
It is not a treatment for weight loss or for significant skin sagging. It is designed for localized fat that does not respond to diet and exercise, in people close to their ideal weight.
Nor does it replace healthy habits or guarantee that you will not accumulate fat again if you gain weight. If you have questions about this, we recommend reading myths about liposuction and weight loss.
Common myths about treatment areas
“If I have my abdomen treated, the fat will move somewhere else”
The fat cells removed do not regenerate, but those remaining in the rest of the body can grow if you gain weight. It is not that the fat “moves”: the body keeps responding to your habits. Maintaining a stable weight is what best protects the result.
“The more fat removed, the better”
No. The goal is a harmonious, natural contour, not removing as much as possible. Removing too much can leave irregularities, and there is a safety limit that the medical team respects.
“Small areas are not worth it”
Sometimes a small area, such as the double chin or the inner knee, is precisely the one that most changes how the contour is perceived. What matters is not the size of the area, but how much it contributes to your goal.
“All areas turn out the same”
Each area responds differently depending on the skin, the amount of fat and the anatomy. That is why the plan is personalized and expectations are discussed area by area.
How the areas to treat are decided in your case
At the evaluation, Dr. Evelyn Alfonso personally reviews each area and discusses your priorities with you. Some of the factors considered:
- Fat distribution: where the excess is and how much there is in each area.
- Skin quality: its elasticity and ability to adapt to the new contour.
- Body proportion: sometimes treating a neighboring area greatly improves the result in the main area.
- Your general health and weight: they determine what is safe to do in a single surgery.
- Your expectations: what bothers you, how you want to feel and what is reasonable to achieve.
Recovery by area
Recovery depends more on the total extent of the surgery than on any particular area, and it varies from person to person. It is common to have swelling, bruising and tenderness in the treated areas during the first few weeks, and to wear a compression garment as instructed. The result is revealed gradually as the swelling goes down. For a detailed guide, see recovery after LipoVaser week by week and when results become visible.
When to get in touch without waiting for your check-up
After any liposuction, contact the team immediately if you have a fever, severe pain that does not ease with the prescribed treatment, shortness of breath, pain or swelling in a calf, or redness and discharge from an incision.
Frequently asked questions
Which area is treated most often?
The abdomen, often together with the flanks. It is one of the most frequent combinations in both women and men.
Can I treat just one small area, such as the double chin or the knees?
Yes, if the evaluation confirms that it is localized fat and that you are a good candidate. Not every surgery has to be extensive.
Are the scars noticeable?
Liposuction incisions are small and are placed in discreet locations whenever possible. How each person heals varies.
Does LipoVaser work for cellulite?
It is not designed to treat cellulite. Other treatments exist for that, which are assessed separately.
Can I treat more areas in a second surgery?
It is possible. Some people prefer to split the treatment into stages; this is discussed at the evaluation according to your case.
In summary
LipoVaser makes it possible to treat many areas with localized fat: abdomen, flanks, back, arms, thighs, double chin, knees and male chest. Each has its own particularities, and ultrasound technology is especially helpful in fibrous areas and for fine finishing. The areas to be treated, and whether it makes sense to combine them, are defined in a personal evaluation, always with your safety in mind. The procedure is performed in an operating room authorized by the SEREMI de Salud (regional health authority).
