Scalp biopsy in Viña del Mar

A scalp biopsy is a test that analyzes a small sample of the scalp under the microscope. At Clínica Lumos, Dr. Evelyn Alfonso orders it when the evaluation suggests an alopecia that needs an exact diagnosis before deciding on treatment.

We do not perform it on every patient: we only order it when it is necessary.

Why we do it

Diagnosis first, then treatment

Not all hair loss is the same. Some alopecias look similar to the naked eye but are treated very differently.

Exact diagnosis

The right treatment

It confirms what type of alopecia you have so the treatment that actually works for your case can be recommended.

Not operating on an active alopecia

Protecting your result

In some active scarring or inflammatory alopecias, the grafts from a transplant may not survive. That is why we first confirm and treat.

Follow-up

Monitoring progress

It allows scalp diseases to be followed up with medical criteria and the treatment to be adjusted.

When it is indicated

When do we order a scalp biopsy?

We only order it when the evaluation and trichoscopy show suspicious signs:

Signs that raise our suspicion

  • Areas without follicular openings or with scarred skin.
  • Inflammation, redness or scaling around the follicle.
  • Hair loss that progresses quickly or follows an unusual pattern.
  • A diagnosis that is not clear from the trichoscopy.

What it helps us do

  • Tell a common alopecia apart from a scarring or inflammatory one.
  • Decide whether a hair transplant is safe in your case.
  • Choose the right medical treatment.
  • Have a baseline to monitor your progress.

Step by step

How it is done

  1. Evaluation

Dr. Alfonso reviews your history and your trichoscopy, and explains why she is ordering the biopsy.

  2. Local anesthesia

A small area of the scalp is numbed. The procedure itself is not painful.

  3. Sample collection

A small sample is taken with the punch technique and, if necessary, closed with a stitch.

  4. Result

The sample is analyzed by the pathology lab, and Dr. Alfonso explains the diagnosis and treatment to you.

Frequently asked questions

Scalp biopsy

Does every patient get a scalp biopsy?

No. We only order it when the evaluation and trichoscopy show signs that suggest a scarring or inflammatory alopecia, or when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Is a scalp biopsy painful?

It is performed under local anesthesia, so the procedure itself is not painful. There may be mild discomfort in the area for the following days.

Why don't you operate if the alopecia is active?

Because in some active scarring or inflammatory alopecias the grafts may not survive. We diagnose and treat first; a transplant is only recommended when it is safe to do so.

Who analyzes the sample?

The sample is sent to a pathology laboratory, which studies it under the microscope. With that report, Dr. Alfonso defines the diagnosis and treatment.
