What it measures

What does AI trichoscopy measure?

The images are processed with AI-assisted analysis software that automatically counts and measures, objectively and repeatably:

Hair density: hairs and follicular units per cm².
Hair thickness and proportion of fine (miniaturized) hairs.
Hairs per follicular unit.
Comparison between areas, for example the crown versus the donor area.

Because the measurements are recorded, at each follow-up you can compare results with numbers, not just with photos or impressions.

Differential diagnosis

What can trichoscopy detect?

Trichoscopy examines the scalp and hair shaft with a high-magnification digital dermatoscope and polarized light. This reveals details invisible to the naked eye, such as the hair follicles, the scalp's blood vessels and the thickness of each hair, which point to the cause of the hair loss.

Androgenetic alopecia

Differences in thickness between neighboring hairs (miniaturization) and more hair follicles with a single hair, especially at the temples and crown.

Alopecia areata

Typical signs such as black dots, yellow dots and short exclamation-mark hairs.

Telogen effluvium

Diffuse hair loss with empty follicles and new hairs growing, without the miniaturization typical of androgenetic alopecia.

Scarring alopecias

Loss of the follicular openings. In lichen planopilaris there is usually scaling around the follicle; in discoid lupus erythematosus, follicular plugs and characteristic blood vessels.

Seborrheic dermatitis

Yellowish scaling and fine, branching blood vessels on the scalp, which may accompany the hair loss.

Condition of the hair shaft

Breakage, fine hairs or hair shaft abnormalities that point to other causes of hair loss.

Trichoscopy guides the diagnosis. When a scarring alopecia is suspected, Dr. Alfonso may order a scalp biopsy to confirm it.
